The Man in the Glass

Hello all!  Hope everyone is having a wonderful week.  To start this blog off, I would like to share a little bit more about myself and my philosophy on life.  This is my all time favorite quote.

"When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.

For it isn't your father or mother or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass.
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back in the glass.

You may be like Jack Horner and chisel a plum
And think your a wonderful guy.
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.

He's the fellow to please - nevermind all the rest,
For he's with you clear to the end.
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass.
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
If you've cheated the man in the glass."

My grandpa used to talk to us about "the man in the glass" starting at a very young age and it is something that I carry with me and think about every day now.  It is important to understand that what other people think is not everything.  In fact, it is nothing.  We need to focus on doing things to better ourselves because WE want to, not because other people want us to.  I think society puts way too much pressure on people today to have to impress others, because everyone judges.  At the end of the day it is so important to be yourself and live to impress yourself instead of worrying what everyone else thinks.  This is definitely my personal philosophy, and one that I hope to pass on to my children, grandchildren, and students some day.

  1. Heather,

I had never heard that "story" before! It has such a good moral lesson for anyone who reads it. To basically be true to yourself and don't change yourself for others because you might not like what you become in the end. I LOVE it!

  3. Heather -

I really enjoyed this quote! It's definitely something to think about...
"The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back in the glass."

I think many of us forget this.

  4. Wow, very powerful quote/poem. It is unfortunate to see children caring about self image more and more these days. Looking at this blog from an educator's perspective I think it would be fantastic for a teacher to print and laminate this and post it in their classroom. What a great message.

  5. Heather,
Thank you so much for sharing this life quote! I couldn't agree more and have even struggled with this myself. It is such an important thing to have self-confidence and not worry what others think. I would like to teach this to my children in school as well and make sure there is no judgement happening in my classroom. You have a great outlook on life which I respect a whole lot. Gina

  6. Heather I really enjoyed your favorite quote. I too try to live my life by searching inside myself for the person I want to be. That person I want to be is someone I can be proud of for making the world a better place. I have never heard this quote before. I definitely will share this with my kids and with my students when I get my own classroom. Thanks for sharing it with us.

  7. This is a great quote & it could not be more truthful. It i hard to live our lives without wondering what people think of us or if someone likes us or not. We just have to accept that not everyone is going to like us, but that's just life. I live my life not caring what other people think about me, I just do what makes me happy.

  9. That is a great philosophy, and I like how you plan to keep sending it down the generations. I think that will be a really special thing for each generation to carry into the next.

  10. What a great lesson for future teachers because we will face scrutiny constantly! It's important to do what YOU know is best for your STUDENTS and this quote definitely can be a great reminder when the end of the year is in site and the MEAP is creeping up on us not to cheat our students.
