Protect our jobs!

Hope everyone knows what's going on with collective bargaining right now and how it could have an affect on our future jobs. Read about it.  Find a petition and sign it so we can have the right to vote for collective bargaining on the next ballot!

Going right along with my last post, check this out: teachers make too much money.  Take a minute to read some of the comments people made too.  It's honestly shocking how some people do feel that our job is basically to babysit their kids.

One of my teachers showed us this video today in class.  It is incredibly inspirational for current and future teachers.  It's a great reminder that what we make, as educators, is worth so much more than money.  What we make is invaluable.  Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrKGmwhcOGg

The Man in the Glass

Hello all!  Hope everyone is having a wonderful week.  To start this blog off, I would like to share a little bit more about myself and my philosophy on life.  This is my all time favorite quote.

"When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.

For it isn't your father or mother or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass.
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back in the glass.

You may be like Jack Horner and chisel a plum
And think your a wonderful guy.
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.

He's the fellow to please - nevermind all the rest,
For he's with you clear to the end.
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass.
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
If you've cheated the man in the glass."

My grandpa used to talk to us about "the man in the glass" starting at a very young age and it is something that I carry with me and think about every day now.  It is important to understand that what other people think is not everything.  In fact, it is nothing.  We need to focus on doing things to better ourselves because WE want to, not because other people want us to.  I think society puts way too much pressure on people today to have to impress others, because everyone judges.  At the end of the day it is so important to be yourself and live to impress yourself instead of worrying what everyone else thinks.  This is definitely my personal philosophy, and one that I hope to pass on to my children, grandchildren, and students some day.
